Xi'an Jiaotong University is the first well-known institution of higher learning established at home and abroad. It is a key university directly under the Ministry of education.
At the end of the 19th century, Jiawu was defeated and the nation was in danger. Sheng Xuanhuai, a well-known industrialist and educator in modern times, adhered to the belief that "self-improvement is the first thing to be done, and then the first thing to be done is to reserve talents, and then to start learning". He founded Nanyang public school in Shanghai in 1896 and named it Jiaotong University in 1921. The school adheres to the school running tenet of "seeking practical learning, working for industry" and emphasizes the school running goal of "cultivating first-class character, seeking first-class knowledge, creating first-class career and becoming first-class talents". By the 1920s and 1930s, a famous university with unique characteristics of "science and engineering management" was formed, which was known as "MIT" in the East. During the Anti Japanese War, the school moved to the concession, moved to Chongqing, and insisted on running schools in Shanghai and Chongqing. In order to resist foreign aggression, many students joined the army and fought in bloody battles. On the eve of liberation, teachers and students took an active part in the democratic revolution and liberation struggle. The school is known as the "fortress of democracy".
In 1955, the central government decided to move Jiaotong University to Xi'an; from 1956, teachers and students moved to Xi'an in batches; in 1957, it was divided into two parts, Xi'an and Shanghai, which were under unified leadership; in 1959, Xi'an part of Jiaotong University was named Xi'an Jiaotong University, which was listed as one of the sixteen key universities in the country in the same year. In 2000, the State Council decided to merge Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an Medical University and Shaanxi University of Finance and economics into a new Xi'an Jiaotong University.
The school is the key construction unit of the Seventh Five Year Plan and the eighth five year plan. It is one of the first batch to enter the national "211" and "985" engineering construction schools. In 2017, it was selected as a construction university in the national "double first-class" construction list, and 8 disciplines were selected as first-class construction disciplines.
The university is a comprehensive research university with the characteristics of science and engineering, covering 10 disciplines such as science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, literature, law, philosophy, education and art. It has 26 Colleges (departments, centers), 9 undergraduate colleges and 20 affiliated teaching hospitals. At present, there are 6285 teachers, including 3109 full-time teachers. Among the teaching staff, there are 44 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 6 national famous teachers, 42 winners of the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, 25 experts with outstanding contributions, 30 candidates for the national "one million talents project" and "one million talents project in the new century", 29 leaders of the innovation team of the Ministry of education, 234 winners of the "New Century Excellent Talents Training Plan" of the Ministry of education and China 491 experts with outstanding contributions and government special allowance.
There are 42379 students, including 19012 undergraduates, 21383 postgraduates and 1984 international students. There are 86 undergraduate disciplines, 32 first-class disciplines authorized by doctor's degree, 43 first-class disciplines authorized by master's degree, 5 authorized points authorized by doctor's degree, 27 authorized points authorized by master's degree, 25 post doctoral mobile stations, 8 national first-class key disciplines, 5 national key laboratories, 7 National Engineering (Technology) research centers, 3 National Engineering Laboratories, and national international science and technology cooperation base There are 5 local governments, 1 Collaborative Innovation Center in 2011 and 129 provincial and ministerial key scientific research bases. According to the data released by ESI, by March 2020, 15 disciplines of the university had entered the top 1% of the world's academic institutions, 2 disciplines had entered the top 1 ‰, and engineering had entered the top 1 ‰.
The school implements the four in one talent cultivation concept of "character cultivation, knowledge impartation, ability cultivation and thinking innovation", and establishes the "general education + wide caliber professional education" and the "Ben Shuo Bo Tong" talent cultivation system.
We will continue to face the world's leading edge in science and technology, the main battlefield of the economy, and the major needs of the country. Since moving to the University, it has created more than 100 "firsts" in scientific research fields at home and abroad, and played a leading role in seizing the high point of scientific research and development of Jiaotong University, including the establishment of the first Institute of Engineering Thermophysics in China, the first major in steam turbine, automobile manufacturing, refrigeration and cryogenics and compressor, and the development of the first large general electronic computer and independent knowledge in China For the first time in the world, the theory of double shear unified strength is put forward.
Extensive international exchanges.
