The school is directly under the Civil Aviation Administration of China. Its predecessor was established in May 1956 with the approval of Premier Zhou Enlai. Chairman Mao Zedong appointed the aviation school of Civil Aviation Administration of China. In September of the same year, with the approval of the Ministry of national defense, the school was renamed the 14th Aviation School of the people's Liberation Army. In May 1963, the Ministry of education reported to the State Council that the university had been included in the list of institutions of higher learning. In October of the same year, according to the instructions of the Central Military Commission, the University was renamed as China Civil Aviation advanced aviation school. In December 1987, it was renamed China Civil Aviation Flight Academy.

After nearly 62 years of construction and development, the school has become a full-time university with the largest scale and the strongest ability of flight training in the world, which has a very high influence in China, especially in the world civil aviation. More than 90% of the captains of CAAC graduated from this school, which is known as the "cradle" of CAAC pilots and "Huangpu" of CAAC management cadres.

The school is located in Guanghan City, Sichuan Province, the hinterland of Chengdu Plain, covering an area of more than 17000 mu, with a construction area of more than 1.5 million square meters, a total fixed asset value of more than 9 billion yuan (excluding land asset value), and a total teaching equipment value of 6.2 billion yuan. The school has also built an aeroengine maintenance training center jointly established by China, the United States and France, which is used for education and teaching, accounting for about 80% of the domestic fleet engines. At the same time, the school is a maintenance and overhaul center authorized by Bendix / King's company of the United States, Lycoming motivation, Continental engine and other well-known aviation enterprises, as well as an ICAO pilot and controller English "Examiner" training center, examination center, aircraft maintenance license examination center, flight Dispatcher Training Center and engineering technology training center authorized by CAAC Provide technical support and training for CAAC's legislation and construction of standards.

In the past 62 years, the university has formed a group of brand professional groups and advantageous disciplines with great influence in the international, domestic and civil aviation fields under the five disciplines of science, engineering, culture, management and law, and is a pilot unit of "MPL" course promoted by the United Nations. The school has 7 national and provincial key majors and 17 national or provincial excellent courses. Among them, the flight technology specialty is the national level talent training mode innovation experimental area, and the navigation laboratory is the "Sichuan experimental demonstration center". At present, the school has 7 master's training centers, 18 training directions and 7 international cooperation projects (America, Britain, France, etc.), and 30 specialties. The teaching and talent training covers all fields of civil aviation transportation and general aviation.

The school has 3300 teaching staff and more than 1300 teachers. Among them, there are more than 400 teachers with senior titles such as super pilot, meritorious pilot, Professor, researcher, professor and senior engineer. Young and middle-aged teachers with doctor's degree and master's degree account for more than 75% of the total number of teachers. Among them, there are members of ICAO expert group, experts specially engaged in civil aviation, young and middle-aged experts and professors with outstanding contributions from Sichuan Province, and recipients of special allowances from the State Council.

As of 2014, the school has trained 100000 graduates of all kinds for China and Asian and African countries. Among them, the training of civil aviation flight talents accounts for more than 80% of the total number of existing pilots of CAAC. Among the graduates, there are not only the elites in the industry who are the director and deputy director of CAAC, the general manager of aviation group, the chairman of the joint stock company and the director of regional administration, but also the technical backbones who have been working on the front line for a long time. Over the years, the employment rate of our graduates has always been the top of the civil aviation and Sichuan universities. It has been appraised as an advanced unit for the employment of university students by China civil aviation and Sichuan province for many years.

Since the beginning of 1960s, the school has trained nearly 6000 flight, maintenance and air traffic control talents for 16 countries and regions in Asia and Africa. At present, the school is in contact with civil aviation institutions and aviation colleges in 21 countries and regions including the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Russia, civil aviation institutions such as the international civil aviation organization, the International Civil Aviation Transport Association, the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States (FAA) and the European Joint Aviation Administration (JAA), Boeing, Airbus and Airbus parent companies EADS and SAS Famous aviation manufacturing enterprises such as Nike Ma, GE and international aero engine company have established extensive communication and cooperation relations.

Since 2000, more than 5000 students have gone to the United States, Britain, France, Australia and other countries to study, and received nearly 300 students from friendly countries. At the same time, the school will send a certain number of experts and professors to study, give lectures and give lectures abroad every year.
